No it's not 'smoke and mirrors'. UAD's help my very powerful i7 system remain stable.
Interesting, cos the Uad's make my almost as powerful Macpro octocore more unstable.
If the cards are fully loaded and I am using a few manleys and fatsos then sometimes the project wont load because of the way that the cards allocate Au's differently to each card each time.
Plus occasionally I have to either reset the cards and or reboot as everything in my project looses sync.
SO i certainly wouldn't say that they make a system more stable. Plus if you have a few of them on a channel strip they introduce a huge amount of latency, annoying that there isn't a chainer plug years after I bought into this platform it's consistently been something that users have asked for yet never been addressed by UA.
As for the cards being necessary, weren't they asking a while back about hybrid systems?
i'd love to invest more in the UA platform but I am hesitant due to the fact that computer tech moves quite fast and there are excellent native solutions that keep coming out (granted not the same0.
All this being said if the new plug is a room sim and it sounds like ocean way an I can place my drums, percussion, other instruments in that room, compress / equalise the different mics and perhaps have some control over the bleed of the instruments then that will be quite something. I hope they make an announcement today.
It would be interesting if it was hybrid (if it's convolution based wouldn't it have to be due to memory restrictions on the cards?)
